No Need to Wait to Complete Financial Aid Application

April 04, 2017

Students who plan to enroll in Wayne Community College during the 2017-2018 school year need to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) now.

The 2017-2018 FAFSA has been available since Oct. 1, 2016 and students could submit their applications as early as that date. This permanent change from the Jan. 1 start of the submission period is possible because of another change; they will now report income and tax information from the previous year’s tax return.

“Students do not need to wait to complete their tax return for 2016 first, as the application will use income from 2015,” explained WCC Financial Aid Specialist Vanessa Jernigan. “Students who wait to complete application run the risk of missing out on aid for which they may otherwise be eligible.”

The information to be used for the 2017-2018 application, which is for college attendance from July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018, is the same that students used on their 2016-2017 FAFSA. The 2016 income and tax information from this year’s return will be used to complete the 2018-2019 FAFSA.

Information about the changes can be found at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/about/announcements/fafsa-changes.
