Four students have been awarded State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Continuing Education Scholarships for the spring 2014 semester at Wayne Community College.Anthony Barnes of Princeton, Tonya Callon of Goldsboro, Savannah Hickman of Rosewood, and Danita Kelley of Mount Olive were each awarded $750 for registration fees, books, certification fees, and course supplies for WCC Continuing Education Services classes, and possibly for transportation, childcare, and living expenses.

Barnes used his scholarship for notary public and real estate courses. Callon and Hickman took medical billing and coding classes. All three of the students are also enrolled in college credit programs.

Kelley trained to become an activity director in a healthcare-related setting, building on the Nurse Aide II certification she already holds. She has already been offered a job as a result of her activity director class.

The scholarships were funded by the SECU Foundation. The foundation established the program to help meet the needs of North Carolina’s unemployed and underemployed residents, focusing on assisting unemployed and underemployed adults, military veterans, and members of the National Guard. It provides 10 $750 scholarships to each of North Carolina’s 58 community colleges to pay for short-term training that leads to state-regulated or industry-recognized credentials.

Since 2004, SECU Foundation has supplied scholarships to each of the 58 North Carolina community colleges, with an annual commitment of more than $1,000,000.

A not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members, SECU has been providing employees of the State of North Carolina and their families with consumer financial services for over 76 years. With more than 1.8 million members, SECU provides services through 253 branch offices, 1,100 ATMs, 24/7 Contact Centers and a website, www.ncsecu.org.

The SECU Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization funded solely by the contributions of SECU members, promotes local community development in North Carolina primarily through high impact projects in the areas of housing, education, healthcare and human services.
