Basic Skills Future Students
Don’t wait anymore…it’s time to act now and start the process of enrolling at Wayne Community College and complete your GED or High School Diploma!
Below is information about our Basic Skills enrollment process.
New students and students who have not enrolled in more than a year go through an assessment to determine math and reading placement for the GED or the Adult High School program. That process is referred to as Orientation. Orientations are scheduled during the afternoon and the evening and require 4 sessions of attendance. The Orientation is handled on a first come, first served basis. Information regarding specific time, date, and place can be obtained by calling 919-739-6908.
After Orientation, students can begin their program of study. Whether they choose the GED program or the Adult High School diploma program, a learning plan will be designed for the student. That plan can involve one or more of the following:
• Taking classes on-campus instructed by Basic Skills teachers.
• Studying on-line using an educational software program.
• Studying at an off-campus GED class site (there are several in Wayne County).
We have two internet based programs which have all five subject areas of study to review for the GED test. The areas are Reading, Science, Social Studies, Writing and Math. Students take GED practice tests, as well as the official GED tests, on campus and not online.
We also offer on-line courses and campus classes for students who want to pursue an Adult High school diploma.
There is no cost to use the on-line programs. Students simply need access to a computer with a good internet connection. In a one-on-one session, students are shown how to access lessons and given sign-on information.
Students who choose to study at an off-campus site for their GED need only to go to that class site to complete the orientation process and become registered. If an off-campus student wants online software access, their instructor can refer them to campus for a one-on-one session to get sign-on information.
