Library Cards
With the addition of a library barcode on the back, the picture ID card issued to WCC students, faculty, and staff serves as an Erwin Library card.
All WCC faculty and staff members, whether part-time or full-time, must have a WCC picture ID made by the Student Activities Office to which the Library barcode may be affixed.
For students, a current semester sticker must also appear on the ID card, available upon proof of payment of fees from the Student Activities office on the first floor of the Wayne Learning Center (WLC 145) where ID’s are originally made.
Other WCC patrons who live or work in Wayne County will be issued a generic blue plastic Erwin Library card with a barcode sticker affixed to it, but must present some form of current, valid picture ID such as a N.C. Driver's License, before the card can be issued. If this library card is lost, the patron may re-register for a new generic blue plastic Erwin Library card at a charge of $3.00, payable in cash only at the library Circulation Desk.
Current Wayne Community College (WCC) students, faculty and staff who have a valid WCC ID card should apply for an Erwin Library card using the PDF fillable form,
In the PDF fillable form the Datatel number is your WCC Student ID number, which you should enter on the form if you know it (library staff will validate it before issuing a barcode sticker to you). The Barcode number field in the form will be completed by library staff.
Once you have filled out the form online, you may submit it electronically in one of three ways:
-
Digitally sign and email it to the Erwin Library at: wcc-library@waynecc.edu, using the instructions in the Online Erwin Library Card Registration guide. Your WCC Library barcode sticker number will be emailed back to you as soon as possible, and, if you request it in your email message to us, your barcode sticker will be mailed to you by surface mail to affix to the back of your WCC ID card.
-
Print out the form, sign it and fax it to the Erwin Library fax number (919.736.3204). On the fax you send please indicate how you will retrieve your Erwin Library barcode from us. Either request that we mail your Erwin Library barcode sticker back to you to affix to the back of your WCC ID card, or indicate that you will return to the library to present your WCC ID card to have the barcode sticker affixed to it.
-
Save the unsigned form as a PDF file to your home or office computer's hard drive, or your flash drive, then email it as an attachment to the Erwin Library at:: wcc-library@waynecc.edu. You must then give library staff at least one business day, excluding Saturday or Sunday, to process the registration form, after which you may come by the Erwin Library Circulation Desk to present your WCC ID card, sign the processed form, and receive your library barcode sticker.
Erwin Library community patrons must register in the library in person for a library card.
A current Erwin Library card must always be presented at the circulation desk to check out any materials, use any materials placed on Academic Reserve, or to sign in to use a computer workstation or headphones with a computer workstation.
This barcode also provides login access to all research databases and the patron’s account in the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) to renew checked out items before they are overdue, or to place an interlibrary hold on an item held by another CCLINC library.
A third party may present an absent Erwin Library patron’s card to check out materials for the absent patron, but the patron whose card is used will have full responsibility for the good condition and return of the items.
Computers
Eighteen computers are available for use by patrons with a library card. All library computer workstations have Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010 and flash drives. Though the library computers are not Multimedia Ready and do not have course software installed, those features are offered in the Open Computer Lab in Magnolia Building, room 215.
DVDs placed on an Erwin Library Academic Reserve may be viewed by a WCC student on a library computer workstation with headphones checked out from the Library Circulation Desk.
Library computer workstation users must abide by campus-wide use policies which include limited access to social networking and game sites. The policies are clearly stated and available in print form at the Library Circulation Desk.
Wireless Access
Wireless internet access is freely available to all Erwin Library users and college visitors with no special login required.
Reference Service
Library staff members are always happy to provide any help students or faculty may need to search the various databases or paper resources to find a wide variety of information. Interlibrary loan service is free and includes acquiring journal articles as well as books for any research project.
The Reference Librarian conducts library tours and information literacy training sessions in the Library Literacy Lab by appointment. In these sessions, students receive hands-on instruction for searching the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), all research databases, including the WCC Single Search, and other internet and paper resources.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
If the Erwin Library does not own a book you need for your research, or an article you need is not available in any of the research databases available from the WCC Library webpage, then you may request the library staff order a copy of the book or article from another library. This library-to-library lending is called Interlibrary Loan (ILL).
All ILL transactions for books and copies of articles are absolutely free to any Erwin Library patron who holds a current Erwin library card, with some restrictions, such as in-house use only of ILL materials for community patrons, or for WCC students should the item cost $100 or more.
It will usually take one to two weeks for a book to be mailed to the Erwin Library for you to pickup and use. Copies of articles are often faxed or emailed, which may take a much shorter time. You will be called or emailed by the ILL staff member at the Erwin Library when the book or article is ready for you.
You must present your Erwin Library card when picking up an ILL loan, though you may give your library card to a third person to pick up the item. The requestor is always responsible for the return of the materials in good condition.
If the ILL item is designated as in-house use only, the patron must come to the library in person to use the materials.
Online Databases
One computer in front of the Circulation Desk for searching the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) isavailable in the library which does not require a library card or sign out procedure.
The OPAC computer may be searched for holdings in the Erwin Library only, or by a single search, determine holdings in the entire CCLINC consortium catalogs. An interlibrary loan hold may be placed on an item owned by another community college library in the OPAC by any patron with a library card patron code. These items usually take at least a week to arrive at the Erwin Library.
Erwin Library users will now find a group of tabs on the homepage providing a portal to all options now available through WCC Single Search for making the most of the library's ever-expaniding collection of electronic, as well as print, resources.
Accessible through the WCC Single Search aggregate database are over thirteen thousand video-recordings, as well as thousands of electronic books, articles and images from twenty-two research databases in addition to those subscribed to through NC LIVE.
All the research databases and digital video resources are available to any user in the Erwin Library computer lab with no login, and to a user outside of the library with a simple login using his or her Erwin Library barcode.
During hours that the library is open, any patron may call the Library Circulation Desk (919.739.6891, or ext. 6891 on-campus) for help in searching any of the online catalogs or databases, or for aid in placing an online request for books or articles on interlibrary loan. Requests for reference assistance may also always be emailed to wcc-library@waynecc.edu.
Reserves
Erwin Library patrons who are advised by an instructor to find items chosen by the instructor to read or view outside of class on Academic Reserve in the library should make sure to have the course name and number, the instructor’s name and the exact title of the book, article or audiovisual in hand before consulting the Reserve notebook kept at the Library Circulation desk.
Also, a current Erwin Library card must be presented to check out or sign out any item on Reserve.
Most Reserve items have an in-house use only restriction, that is, they must be viewed, read or photocopied in the Erwin Library, though a few classes require some materials to be kept in multiple copies on Reserve so each student may have a copy to check out for an entire semester.
ECU/WCC Teacher Resource Center
The ECU/WCC Teacher Resource Center (TRC), providing resources to Wells Fargo Partnership East students, community college students, and teachers in the surrounding area of Wayne county, is located on the fourth floor of the Wayne Learning Center.
Materials available in the TRC include:
- State adopted textbooks, some sets with student and teacher editions, study guides, assessment guides, transparencies and sample activities.
- Praxis I and Praxis II study guides
- A television with VCR and headphones, convenient for previewing VHS and DVD recordings before checking them out
- DVD, VHS, and CD recordings useful for professional development and instruction in K-12 classrooms
- Educational games
- Magazines for teachers
- Children’s books, both fiction and non-fiction titles
- Instructional duplicating books for lesson planning
An Erwin library patron may access the TRC room by first asking for the room key and leaving his or her picture ID at the Library Circulation Desk until the key is returned.
Any patron registered with an Erwin Library card may check out TRC materials at the Library Circulation Desk.
Checkout of Materials
All General Collection books are checked out for a 21-day period and may be renewed online by the patron in the OPAC, or by phone request to the Library Circulation Desk, if the books are not yet overdue, for an additional 21 days. Though overdue items may not be renewed, they may be checked out again, once they are returned to the Library Circulation Desk and the account cleared.
Though WCC faculty and staff may have an unlimited number of General Collection books checked out on their accounts, WCC students and community patrons are limited to having only three General Collection books checked out on their accounts. Faculty are limited to having only three audiovisual titles (a multi-volume set may be considered a single title) checked out on their library accounts.
Only WCC faculy may check out audiovisual items from the library, but students may view audiovisual items on computer workstations in the library using headphones available for checkout at the Library Circulation Desk.
Reference items may be used or photocopied only in the library.
Fines
Overdue fines are ten cents a day, except for items on three-day to seven-day checkout period, which accrue fines of twenty-five cents per day, and overnight checkout materials which accrue fines of ten cents per hour during the Erwin Library hours of operation.
If either an Erwin Library-owned item or an interlibrary loan item requested for an Erwin Library patron is lost or seriously damaged, only the replacement cost of the item or damages fine assessed by the loaning institution is charged to the patron, with no overdue charges or extra handling charges added.
The replacement cost of an item that is overdue more than sixty days will be invoiced to the patron by mail, and a hold placed on any WCC student’s college account until the invoice is paid, or the item is returned in good condition.
No overdue charges are added to the replacement cost paid by a patron for a long overdue, presumed lost item. After the patron’s library account is cleared, college account holds are then removed immediately.
Printing
The library provides laser print copes and photocopies on any size paper for fifteen cents a page. However, most journal articles from the library databases may be emailed by the patron to their Campus Cruiser account and then opened in the Open Computer Lab to print free copies of up to twenty pages.
Faxes
Library patrons may have a message faxed to the Library fax machine at 919.736.3204, and a PDF copy of the fax will be emailed to the patron.
However, if the patron does not have an email address in his or her Erwin Library card account information, then he or she should call the Library Circulation Desk (919.739.6891, or ext. 6891 on-campus) ahead of time to make arrangements, either for the fax to be sent to the patron by the WCC College internal mail system, or placed on the hold shelf for the patron to pick up in person.
Faxes may be sent from the Library fax machine free of charge if the item is college business, such as those sent out by Campus Voice staff to advertisers in the newsletter.
Faxes sent for any other personal purpose by any WCC faculty, staff, student, or other library community patron, such as requesting a transcript, or sending out a job application will cost $1.00 a page.
