Electronic Resources
Computers
In the WCC Library sixteen computer workstations are available for use with a current WCC Library card, which must be presented and left at the Library Circulation Desk when a signing up to use a workstation. WCC student library cards are required to have a current semester sticker on the back. These stickers may be obtained upon proof of payment of fees at the Student Activities Office (WLC 145).
All the computers have Windows XP, Microsoft Office 2007 and flash drives. Users must abide by campus-wide use policies which include no access to social networking sites and audio or streaming video because of bandwidth and security issues. The policies are clearly stated and available in print form at the Library Circulation Desk.
Wireless Access
Wireless internet access is available in the WCC Library to WCC students, faculty and staff who are registered as WCC Library users, and have registered in person with their laptops in hand with the WCC IT Department in the Open Computer Lab (Magnolia 215).
Student wireless registration expires on the last day of each semester and must be renewed in person with the laptop in hand at the Open Computer Lab. WCC faculty and staff wireless registration only expires when the employee is no longer currently employed with WCC.
A procedure will soon be implemented so that WCC Library users who are registered as non-students (community patrons) will be able to access the wireless network on a temporary basis.
Guests of the college, such as speakers, trainers or presenters, must be pre-registered with the WCC IT staff for temporary wireless access anywhere on the WCC campus. The request should be sent by email to the wcc-helpdesk at least a week in advance of the planned visit.
Databases
Six major research databases are available for WCC Library users, both on and off campus:
- NC LIVE is an aggregate database which also contains the WorldCat database, useful for placing online interlibrary loan requests.
- Literature Resource Center contains current and comprehensive online literature criticism, biographical information, reviews and reference.
- Bloom’s Literary Reference Online offers overviews, synopses, analyses, and literary criticism of thousands of works including novels, poetry and plays.
- Columbia Granger’s World of Poetry contains nearly 200,000 poems in full text as well as information on poets, anthologies, biographies and commentaries.
- Magill’s Medical Guide offers detailed articles on the major diseases and disorders that affect the human body.
- Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is "a one-stop source for information on today's hottest social issues, featuring viewpoint articles, topic overviews, full-text magazine, academic journal, and newspaper articles, primary source documents, statistics, images and podcasts, and links to Websites."
Passwords for the databases to be used remotely are issued with library cards (also available with an online request form), or may be obtained later in person, by email or over the phone, with verification of the patron’s library barcode.
Reference help with searching the databases or placing an interlibrary loan request online is always available in person or by phone (919.735.5151, ext. 293) during the WCC Library’s hours of operation.
