Federal Requirements 4.4: Appropriate Program Length

The institution demonstrates that program length is appropriate for each of the degrees offered.

Judgment of Compliance: The College certifies COMPLIANCE.

Narrative:

The appropriateness of program length is established according to guidelines from the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS). The NCCCS program division ensures that programs offered at state community colleges use the program curriculum as set forth in the NCCCS Curriculum Standards (Link requires internet connection.). The approval process for new program development ensures a thorough and collaborative study that allows program length to be determined according to discipline-specific needs and then reviewed by various levels. At the local level, the WCC Curriculum Committee and the Curriculum Committee of the Board of Trustees review all curriculum recommendations prior to seeking approval from the full Board of Trustees (Operations Management Supporting Documents). At the state level, the NCCCS program personnel review the curriculum proposals from the local colleges before presenting them to the State Board of Community Colleges for final approval. Only those programs that have been approved by the WCC Curriculum Committee, the WCC Board of Trustees and, subsequently, the State Board of Community Colleges are offered at Wayne.

Completion requirements for each degree program are identified in the WCC General Catalog. The catalog gives information specifying the total number of credit hours to be earned for graduation, any specified distribution of general education credits needed, and other requirements that students must meet in order to receive a degree (varies by degree program). Program brochures and individual program degree plans, as well as the college's web site (Link requires internet connection.) detail completion requirements and total number of credit hours to be earned for graduation. Associate of Applied Science degree programs range from 65 to 76 semester-hour credits. Associate of Arts, Associate of Science and Associate of Fine Arts (college transfer) require 65 semester credit hours. Descriptions of all associate degrees are located in the college catalog.
