The Wayne Business and Industry Center will offer a seminar on Oct. 30 on transitioning from Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) to the new Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).
The session, which is designed for business owners and their representatives, will include a hot-dog-and-hamburger lunch served at 11a.m. and presentation at noon. It will be held in Room 104 of the Walnut Building. Cost for the lunch and the seminar is $10.
Steve Knotts, an Industrial Systems instructor at the college, will discuss five key points businesses need to make the transition to the GHS: creating a transition plan, performing a chemical inventory, managing the incoming Safety Data Sheets, replacing workplace labels, and training employees. He also will be available to answer questions.
“After years of discussion, debate and review, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has finally adopted the Globally Harmonized System,” said Small Business Center Director Charles P. Gaylor IV. “Understanding the new system will be vital for existing business owners as well entrepreneurs planning their ventures.”
“While the transition may seem daunting, business owners that employ the right mix of people, process and technology should have plenty of runway to adopt the updated standards on time or even ahead of schedule,” Gaylor said. The seminar will last about an hour. Participants are encouraged to stay afterward for discussion with their colleagues.
