The Foundation of Wayne Community College’s series of lectures on American Civil War battles continues Tuesday, June 17 with a talk on the Battle of Cold Harbor.
The Battle of Cold Harbor, one of the most brutal confrontations of the war, was fought May 31-June 12, 1864 in Virginia. It was the final battle of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign and resulted in nearly 7,000 Union casualties within an hour.
Presenter Jeff Bockert is the East Region supervisor for the N.C. Division of State Historic Sites. Prior to that, he was the Civil War specialist for N.C. Department of Cultural Resources. Bockert’s work experience includes managing the President James K. Polk Birthplace, serving as associate curator on the Battleship North Carolina, and working at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. He has also been a college history instructor and is the author of several works on presidential and military history.
The next lectures in the series are on the Battle of Petersburg on July 22; and the Battle of the Crater on Aug. 19.
All are set for 7 p.m. and will be held in Moffatt Auditorium. They are free and open to the public with no reservations or registrations required.
