Club Garners Karate Honors

Members of WCC’s Budo Club brought home honors from a recent karate tournament.

Competing and placing in the 11th Annual Karate Madness Open Championships in Kinston, N.C. on March 29 were
Elijah Slater: first place in the weapon kata, first in sparring (kumite), and second in open-hand kata;
Bumbi Lee: first in open-hand kata, second in weapon kata, and third in sparring;
Tony Sanders: first in sparring and second in open-hand kata;
Zachery Rogers: second in sparring and fourth in open-hand kata;
Shaquan Oliver: first in open-hand kata and third in sparring; and
their sensei, Matthew Coe Smith, first in sparring, first in weapon kata, second in open-hand kata, and overall grand champion in his division, men age 18-34.

The open tournament was the first for members of the Budo Club, which practices Okinawan style of martial arts.

Wayne Community College is a public, two-year college with an open-door admission policy located in Goldsboro. As it works to develop a highly skilled and competitive workforce, it serves 15,000 individuals annually as well as businesses, industry and community organizations with high quality, affordable, accessible learning opportunities, including more than 100 college credit programs.
