Detention Officer Course Set to Begin

Wayne Community College Continuing Education will provide an evening Detention Officer Certification Course this fall.

The program provides 162 hours of training and covers 21 subject areas required for sworn detention officers. At the end of the course, students take a comprehensive exam which they must pass in order to be certified.

“This course has produced an excellent placement rate for students who come into it serious about making a career of being a Detention Officer,” said WCC Public Safety Division Chair Beverly Deans. “They will find the training strenuous but it has to be in order to prepare them for the State certification exam and the rigors of a job in a detention facility.”

The course runs Sept. 25 through Nov. 20, 6 to 11 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on some Saturdays.

Students must be high school graduates and will have to obtain criminal background checks and physical examinations prior to the first class. They will be given all necessary paperwork during the registration session that will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23 in Room 121 of the Pine Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro.

Total cost of the program is $320, which includes registration fees, uniform shirt, books, and miscellaneous supplies.
