Ashton T. Griffin, lead chemistry instructor at Wayne Community College, presented at two chemistry conferences recently.

He spoke on “What Is New in the Teaching of Chemistry with Social Media at Wayne Community College?” at the 204th Two-Year College Chemistry Consortium (2YC3) Conference held at Collin College in McKninney, Texas.

“A highlight for me other than presenting my paper was seeing and meeting Bassam Z. Shakhashiri from the University of Wisconsin-Madison who is the ‘dean of chemistry lecture demonstrators in America.’ It was a thrill to see him work his magic,” Griffin reported.

At the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) 247th National Meeting held in Dallas, Texas, he addressed two different topics.

In a session on “Challenges Faced at Two-Year Colleges: Transitioning Students from Two-Year To Four-Year Institutions or Industry,” his lecture was on “How 2 + 2 = 6: How Six New Performance Objectives and a New Chemistry Articulation Agreement Are Impacting the Success of Our students as They Transition from a Community College to a Four-Year Institution.”

He also spoke on “Chemistry 151 and 152: Why Yes, There is a Wayne Community College General Chemistry App for That” in a session on “Mobile Devices, Augmented Reality, and The Mobile Chemistry Classroom.”

Both presentations at the ACS conference also were well received, Griffin said.

Griffin was among more than 13,700 participants at the ACS national meeting. Over 10,000 scientific papers were presented at the event. He commented that it was “unreal” to see so many chemists, students, exhibitors and guests in the same place, but in midst of a poster session, he ran into his organic chemistry professor from Davidson College.

The American Chemical Society is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. With more than 161,000 members, ACS is the world’s largest scientific society and a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. Its main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

The 2YC3 is an affiliate group of the American Chemical Society that is dedicated to maintaining and improving the quality of chemistry offerings in two-year colleges. The consortium provides a forum for chemistry educators to enhance student learning through professional development conferences.

Wayne Community College is a public, two-year college with an open-door admission policy located in Goldsboro, N.C. As it works to develop a highly skilled and competitive workforce, it serves 15,000 individuals annually as well as businesses, industry and community organizations with high quality, affordable, accessible learning opportunities, including more than 100 college credit programs.
