WCC Single Search

Single Search tab

Available on the Erwin Library homepage, the WCC Single Search box makes the most of the library’s ever-evolving collection of electronic resources, searchable through the EBSCO Discovery Service.  These resources are a carefully selected group of electronic materials in a wide variety of databases, including:

  • ebooks
  • streaming videos
  • magazines
  • newspapers
  • journals
  • language-learning tools
  • open access sources

Building on the core of resources provided by NC LIVE’s 93 databases, the Erwin Library has subscribed to an additional 62 databases as a way to expand and enrich the NC LIVE core holdings to more closely meet the needs of Wayne Community College’s academic programs and student research needs.

All of the resources searchable on the NC LIVE site are already included in the WCC Single Search, along with the others provided by the Erwin Library; it truly is a “single search.”  All you will need for access to the WCC Single Search is your own Erwin Library barcode number to login.  As a WCC student, faculty or staff member you may even apply for that online using the Library Card Application.

Just as “NC LIVE offers free electronic access to resources for all ages on topics ranging from careers, business, and investing, to health, history, and genealogy,” the WCC Single Search expands those subject areas to provide more coverage in topics such as those used for current issues, critical thinking, literature, history, science, computers, applied technology, allied health and business research.  More materials on researching jobs and careers, as well as preparing for professional and advanced educational exams are also available.

Publication Title Search tab

You will also find a Publication Title Search box in a tab beside that for the WCC Single Search.  This feature is especially useful for searching the title (or “has this word in the title”) of individual journals, ebooks or streaming videos.

For example, you may search the title of a journal, such as Nursing Outlook to pull up the entire list of issues held in electronic format for that single title.  Then, you can either browse the various issues just as you would copies of the print journal on a shelf, or even conduct a search over the content of all the available issues of that particular journal to see if articles are available on a specific topic in which you are interested.  Keeping up with new issues as they are published is easy with this tool.

OPAC Search link

Below these search boxes is the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) link to a search interface for the library’s online catalog of print books.  You may choose to search for only holdings in the Erwin library, or those in the nearly 60 combined libraries of the Community College Libraries in North Carolina Consortium (CCLINC).

Tutorials, Citation and Subject Guides

Many aids to using the WCC Single Search, Publication Title Search, or the OPAC are available on the Tutorials, Citation and Subject Guides page.  For example, the WCC Single Search Basics: Find, Permalink and Cite Scholarly Article (PDF) tutorial will help you with developing your search strategy for finding scholarly or peer-reviewed articles, as well as generating a citation to use in your final Bibliography or Works Cited page, and retrieving permalinks to use to access the same articles again directly.

Research Guides

You will find more aids to these searches in the Student Guide to Erwin Library Research Guide (a link to which is included on all Moodle class pages in the Student Resources drop-down menu).  Other such Research Guides focus on needs of students in specialized fields such as dental hygiene and medical lab technology.  A Faculty Guide to Erwin Library provides aids for instructors in guiding students in the use of these library resources.

Internet Resource links

Use the Internet Resource Links page, also found on the library homepage, to find a comprehensive, categorized and annotated list of free website links to everything from government publications, to weather reports, from the Center for Disease Control for toxicity reports, to Project Gutenberg for freely accessible digitized books.
