Presidential Search Message from the Board Chairman

Our College has a culture of excellence. Even through the challenges endured over the past year, Wayne Community College has demonstrated excellence and remained steadfast in its commitment to our students, our mission, and to our community. It is my great privilege to help continue that culture as we launch the search for Wayne Community College’s 8th president.
Dr. Thomas A. Walker Jr. exited the post of President on July 23, 2021, after accepting the position of Senior Advisor for Economic Development and Military Affairs for The University of North Carolina System. In addition to the duties implied by the title, he will be the liaison between the University of North Carolina System and the North Carolina Community College System. This appointment undoubtedly will help to position Wayne Community College for untold opportunities, and we look forward to working with Dr. Walker in this new capacity. During his time at WCC, Dr. Walker worked with a passion for the community and a deep commitment to our students, faculty, and staff. He leaves Wayne Community College with multiple national awards and in a place of prominence amongst our peers. The Board of Trustees thanks Dr. Walker for his many contributions, and we are grateful for his promise of continued support well into the future. Upon the date of his exit, the Board appointed Dr. Patricia A. “Patty” Pfeiffer as Interim President and looks forward to her leadership during this time of transition.
The Board’s most important duty is to select the College president. We take this responsibility very seriously and have benchmarked best practices from around the country to develop a transparent and inclusive search process. We will work alongside students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community to conduct a nationwide search. Details about the search will be shared in a plethora of forums, and we will post frequent updates on our progress.
Our expectation is to attract talent of the absolute highest caliber befitting the mission, culture, history, and spirit of excellence that characterizes Wayne Community College. There are numerous ways you can get involved and help support this effort:

The feedback form on this site will be open for the duration of the presidential search process. Feel free to send us your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions at any time. The search committee will consider input from members of the College community throughout all stages of the search process.
- Participate in interviews with the candidates.
The applications we receive will be vetted by a seasoned search consultant and the most promising candidates will be presented to the search committee as possible finalists. Further, the search committee will have access to all applications and will be asked to choose their own top candidates. Once compiled, finalists for this position will be asked to visit campus and to provide presentations to the board, the campus community, and the public. I hope that, when we reach this point, the presidential search will have widespread participation and attendance, particularly among students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Your thoughts about these candidates being a fit for Wayne Community College’s priorities will help inform the selection of our next president.
