There is still space in the World War I mini-course set to begin next week at Wayne Community College.
The Foundation of Wayne Community College’s “Over There But Not Over: The Legacy of the ‘Great War’ in Memory, Myth, and Mapmaking” classes, which were delayed in starting on March 3 due to weather, will begin March 10. They will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m. every Monday through March 31.
According to Bill Brettmann, who will lead the class, the course will “explain the enduring legacy of this world-changing catastrophe inherited by Europeans and Americans in the hundreds of cemeteries which dot the European landscape; in new literary and artistic forms; in inventions such as the wristwatch and the safety-razor; in the creation of new nations and the collapse of empires; and in the resurrection of Woodrow Wilson’s foreign policy of international cooperation during the Cold War.”
Brettmann notes that 2014 is the centennial anniversary of the First World War, which is “largely ignored by by the American public.”
