Two Allied Health Courses Provide Job Training

Wayne Community College Continuing Education will offer two courses that prepare students for jobs in health care.

“Activity Director – Basic” (CID # 51933) provides basic training to individuals desiring to become an activity director in a healthcare-related setting. It provides the course hours required for activity directors for adult care homes and for nursing facilities, with an additional minimum of 10 hours in documentation including assessment and care planning processes necessary to work in a nursing facility.

A high school diploma or GED is required to take the Activity Directory course.

It will be taught 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesday, Oct. 2-Dec. 16. Location is Room 221 of the Magnolia Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro.

“ECK/EKG Monitor Tech” (CID # 50362) teaches anatomy and physiology of the heart, principles of electrocardiogram (ECK or EKG) readings, and how to recognize abnormal rhythms of the heart. The goal is for students to become proficient in reading and interpreting EKGs through classroom instruction and simulations practice.

The course is a prerequisite for “12 Lead EKG Technician” certification by the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians. Upon satisfactory completion of it, students are eligible to take the written exam and skills competency test for interpreting cardiac heart rhythms.

Classes are scheduled for 5:30-9:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct. 2-Dec. 11. They will be held in Room 209 of the Magnolia Building.

The fee for each class is $180. Each requires a textbook that is available in the college’s bookstore.

Students may register and pay fees at the Continuing Education Division’s customer service desk in the Walnut Building or by going to “Register Now” at www.waynecc.edu/continuing-ed/.
