WCC Dentist, Students Provide Pre-K Screenings

Wayne Community College dental assisting students and Dr. Kevin Buchholtz, the college’s on-site dentist, performed pre-kindergarten dental screenings on close to 50 children from throughout Wayne County in July.

The dental check-up was one step in a battery of screenings to make certain the youth are prepared to enter kindergarten. Wayne County Health Consultant Brenna Wolfe, RN, of the Wayne County Health Department also conducted vision and hearing tests. They were held in the college’s dental clinic.

The screenings are a collaborative effort coordinated by the Partnership for Children of Wayne County and are part of the North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten Program.

The project is one of many community outreach efforts in which Dr. Buchholtz and the WCC dental students have participated.

One more screening day for NC Pre-K participants is scheduled for 8-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. on August 4 at the Partnership offices at 800 N. William St., Goldsboro. For more information, call (919) 735-3371. The health department’s Dr. Tara Harrison will be doing dental checks and Ms. Wolf will conduct the other tests.
