A bright paper-link garland has snaked its way up the stairwell in the Atrium of the Wayne Learning Center and is wrapping around the balcony of the library at Wayne Community College.

The chain of paper links is more than festive; it is also meaningful, as each link represents a 50-cent contribution and one occupied island in the Philippine archipelago. The number and variety of colors of links testifies to how hard groups all around the campus have been working to raise funds to help the people of the Philippines, and the words written on each link signify a wish for their recovery.

As the “Link Up for the Philippines” project is drawing to a close, the students are making one last push to reach their goal of 2,000 links and $1,000. They are just $250 short.

The money will go to the American Red Cross’ Typhoon Haiyan relief effort. That organization will be working in the Philippines for a long time, helping with recovery from a super storm whose destructive force becomes more and more astounding.

Just today, the Philippine government raised the overall death toll to 6,009 and the number unaccounted for to 1,779. The homes of more than 16 million people were destroyed or damaged, and rebuilding will take at least three years.

Contributions are welcome from the community. Public Information Officer Tara Humphries will accept donations on behalf of the students at her office in Room 105 of the Dogwood Building. Checks should be made out to the American Red Cross with “Philippines Relief” written in the “for” or “notes” line. For more information, contact her at (919) 739-7002 or tarah@waynecc.edu.
