College Plans Events to Honor Veterans, Military

Wayne Community College invites the public to join it in honoring America’s veterans and military service members.

The college will hold a ceremony at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Veterans Monument on its campus. Lt. Col. Michael L. Haire, USAF will provide the keynote address. College employees and students and the Southern Wayne High School High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps will also participate. A reception will follow the program.

Lt. Col. Haire is commander of the 4th Comptroller Squadron on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. He provides financial management, accounting, and financial services to the 4th Fighter Wing, 916th Air Refueling Wing, two Air National Guard bases, and other tenant units. He has served in a variety of financial management positions at the system program office, wing and major command levels.

He has been awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal with one bronze star,  Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

The college will also host a Military and Partners Expo in the Atrium of the Wayne Learning Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizations that provide services to military members, veterans groups, and service branch representatives will set up displays and provide information. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Mobile Vet Center will be stationed in the parking lot in front of the Wayne Learning Center to provide counseling and information on available services for veterans.

An open house will be held in the college’s Military Resource Center for the public to see the new facility. It is located in Room 224 of the Wayne Learning Center.

The ceremony will be moved into Moffatt Auditorium in the Wayne Learning Center Atrium in the event of inclement weather.
