Human Services Technology

Do you want a career that focuses on helping people and making their lives better? If so, then Human Services Technology is the field for you! Our program prepares you for an entry-level position in a variety of human service agencies. Our emphasis of study is on development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes relevant to human services. As a graduate, you could work in positions in mental health, family services, social services, rehabilitation, correction, and educational agencies. You can expect a starting salary range of $18,000 to $27,000. This program prepares students for success through lectures, discussions, labs, and cooperative work experiences.

Credentials available: Associate of Applied Science Degree in Human Services Technology

Average Class Size: 20 - 30 students

Things to Consider: Along with core courses, students will take courses which prepare them for specialization in a specific human service area.

Human Services Technology/Substance Abuse

(Effective Fall 2011, this program will no longer be offered. WCC will be "teaching out" the program to currently enrolled students.)

Join one of the helping professions. Study Human Services Technology/Substance Abuse and learn how to assist in drug and alcohol counseling, prevention-oriented educational activities, rehabilitation with recovering clients, counseling in residential facilities, and managing community-based programs. Our emphasis of study includes an overview of chemical dependency, psychological/sociological process, the 12 Core Functions, intervention techniques with individuals in groups, and follow-up activities with recovering clients. Graduates will work as substance abuse counselors, DWI counselors, halfway house workers, residential facilities employees, and substance abuse education specialists. You can expect a starting salary range of $18,000 to $27,000. This program prepares students for success through lectures, discussions, labs, and cooperative work experiences.

Things to Consider: With educational and clinical experiences, graduates can obtain certification by the N.C. Substance Abuse Board.
