Time to Register for Spring Classes at WCC

Those who plan to take classes at Wayne Community College next semester should register next week to get the courses and schedule they want.

The open registration for spring 2017 college credit courses at will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Nov. 14, Nov. 16, and Nov. 17; and 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on Nov. 15 on the main campus in Goldsboro.

The next registration opportunities will be 8 a.m.-7 p.m., Jan. 3 and 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Jan. 4, 2017.

Students are encouraged to register as soon as possible to have the best selection of courses. A complete schedule of spring courses can be found at www.waynecc.edu/course-schedules/.

New students must complete the enrollment process, take any necessary placement tests, and be accepted in order to register for classes. The steps that new students need to take are explained at www.waynecc.edu/students-start-here/.

Classes offered on campus and the base, as well as distance education courses, start Jan. 5, and end May 8, 2017.

Tuition and fees are due Dec. 12 for students who register in November and Jan. 4 for those who register in January.The college’s payment plan is one option for those who cannot pay out of pocket; find details at www.mycollegepaymentplan.com/waynecc.

Wayne Community College invites the public to join it in honoring America’s veterans and military service members.

The college will hold a pre-Veterans Day ceremony at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10 in Moffatt Auditorium in the Wayne Learning Center (main building) on its Wayne Memorial Drive campus.

Col. Joe Marm, U.S. Army (Ret.), a Medal of Honor recipient, will provide the keynote address. Col. Marm earned the commendation for selfless, heroic actions as a platoon leader in the 1st Cavalry Division in the Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam in 1965. Despite his own injuries, he “reduced the fire on his platoon, broke the enemy assault, and rallied his unit to continue toward the accomplishment of this mission,” according to the citation for the medal. The battle and Marm’s actions were dramatized in the movie “We Were Soldiers.”

Col. Marm will speak about the importance of remembering the service of others.

College employees and students and the Charles B. Aycock High School Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps will also participate. A reception will follow the program.

The college will also host a Military and Partners Expo in the Atrium of the Wayne Learning Center from 1 to 3 p.m. Organizations that provide services to military members, veterans groups, and service branch representatives will set up displays and provide information.

An open house will be held in the college’s Military Resource Center for the public to visit the facility. It is located in Room 224 of the Wayne Learning Center.

Wayne County residents have several opportunities to take the WorkKeys® tests for the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) in November.

The Wayne Occupational Readiness Keys for Success (WORKS) program will provide testing sessions 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Nov. 1, Nov. 8 and Nov. 29, 12:30-4:30 p.m. on Nov. 17. All of these sessions will be held in Room 136 of the Walnut Building on Wayne Community College’s main campus in Goldsboro. Pre-registration by calling (919) 739-7004 is required.

Cost to take the set of three skill assessments (applied mathematics, locating information, and reading for information) is $36 but assistance to cover that cost may be available.

The Airman and Family Readiness Center on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base offers free assessments to military personnel and their dependents. Call (919) 772-1123 for more information and to register for the next testing session on base.

Those wishing to prepare for the NCRC may take advantage of the self-directed instruction and skills upgrade training offered in the WORKS Lab, which also is located in Room 136 of the Walnut Building. The lab is open 9 a.m.-noon on Mondays and Thursdays, 1-4 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, and 5-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Individuals may earn bronze, silver, gold, or platinum certificates based on their performance on the tests. The NCRC is recognized by employers across the state as a proven measurement of job skills.

Wayne County leads the state, with more than 16,600 certificates awarded. A quarter of the county’s population holds the credential.

WORKS is a collaborative effort of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, Wayne Community College, Wayne County Public Schools, County of Wayne, Wayne County Career Center, City of Goldsboro, and the Eastern Carolina Workforce Development Board. It is housed Wayne Community College’s campus in Goldsboro.

New and returning students who plan to attend Wayne Community College for the spring 2017 semester may apply for Foundation of Wayne Community College scholarships through Friday, Nov. 4.

Scholarship applications are available in the Foundation office in the Dogwood Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro and can be printed from www.waynecc.edu/foundation/scholarships.

Students seeking Foundation scholarships are required to apply for federal financial aid and can do so online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or obtain materials from the WCC Financial Aid Office.

Registration for Wayne Community College’s “Fall II” courses has been rescheduled due to the impact of Hurricane Matthew.

Students can sign up for the eight-week condensed college credit courses 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20; Friday, Oct. 21, and Monday, Oct. 24. Tuition and fees are due Monday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. Classes begin Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Dozens of classes that provide a full semester’s material in an eight-week format are available. They include Animal Feeds and Nutrition, Art Appreciation, Aviation Powerplant Maintenance I, Child Development II, Introduction to Business, Principles of Supervision, Human Resource Management, Business Ethics, Fundamentals of Computing, Substance Abuse, Public Speaking, Principles of Microeconomics, Writing and Research in the Disciplines, American Literature, Local Government Finance, Managing Fire Services, Personal Health and Wellness, American History, Introduction to Computer Numerical Controls (CNC), Job Plan, Bench and Layout, Statistical Methods I, Precalculus Algebra, Precalculus Trigonometry, Principles of Marketing, Routing and Switching II, Health System Concepts, Introduction to Ethics, American Government, General Psychology, Sociology of the Family, Social Problems, and World of Work.

Many developmental mathematics and reading/writing courses are also being offered.
