Small businesses facing economic challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic can get a lifeline.
The Small Business Center at Wayne Community College is offering counseling to support existing businesses impacted by the pandemic and help new businesses take advantage of emerging opportunities.
The Center can provide experts to assist with
general business guidance,
assessing the economic impact of the pandemic,
strategies for scaling business operations,
break-even and cash flow analysis,
marketing plans,
review of financial obligations,
communication with creditors,
loan package preparation, and
business resilience strategies,
as well as make referrals to other sources of assistance.
The Center is able to provide this aid through the end of the year thanks to $51,724 provided by the State Board of Community Colleges.
The Board approved an allocation of nearly $3 million for Small Business Centers at the 58 colleges in North Carolina. The state funding was made possible by the 2020 COVID-19 Recovery Act.
“I’m appreciative that we got this funding that can help sustain people who are already in business and boost those who want to get started,” said Center Director Kimberly Wiggs Gamlin. “It is a great opportunity because there are a lot of people who need very specific counseling.”

The Small Business Center provides resources, free seminars, and one-on-one counseling for exploring business ideas, starting a business, or expanding an existing business. The Small Business Center is a component of the Wayne Business and Industry Center (WBIC) at Wayne Community College. The WBIC offers “on time” and “on target” training, counseling, education, and technical services to business and industry in Wayne County. It involves all levels of business and professional organizations in the local community through four main avenues: the Small Business Center, the WORKS Initiative, Military Business Center, and Customized Training Program.
