Wayne County Commissioner Joe Daughtery has been appointed to serve on the Wayne Community College Board of Trustees.
Daughtery took the oath of office and was sworn in during the regular meeting of the board in May. He was appointed by the Wayne County Board of Commissioners.

Daughtery was elected to the Wayne County Board of Commissioners in 2012 and served as chairman from 2015–2016. He has been continually re-elected as a commissioner and has served two terms on the Wayne County Board of Elections.
In addition to his role as a county commissioner and experience in several career fields, Daughtery has been a member of many boards and commissions in the community. He currently serves on the Wayne County Jetport Commission, Health and Human Services Committee, Appointment Committee, and Wayne County Facilities Committee.
Daughtery was appointed to WCC’s Board of Trustees to fulfill the remaining term of Wayne Aycock, who has transitioned off of the board after 10 years of service.
Aycock was given a plaque at the board meeting in recognition of his steadfast commitment to the growth and success of the College over the past decade.

After Daughtery took the oath to become an official board member, he acknowledged Aycock’s impact at WCC and said he hopes to honor that legacy as he steps into this new leadership role. “I look forward to becoming a team member and helping us improve our college,” he said.
By statute, the 58 North Carolina community college boards of trustees each have 12 members appointed to four-year terms plus the student government president serving as an ex officio nonvoting member. Trustees are appointed by the board of commissioners of the county in which the institution is located and the General Assembly.
State statute also sets out the board’s role with its institution, giving each “powers to enable it to acquire, hold, and transfer real and personal property, to enter into contracts, to institute and defend legal actions and suits, and to exercise such other rights and privileges as may be necessary for the management and administration of the institution.”
