Nursing Group Blankets Y’s Men Event

December 06, 2019

The Wayne Community College Association of Nursing Students is making the holidays warmer for local families.

The club donated more than 320 fleece blankets for distribution at the Y’s Men Outreach Event that will be held Sunday, Dec. 8 at the Goldsboro Family YMCA.

Wayne Community College Association of Nursing Students personnel gathered with blankets they donated to the Y’s Men Outreach Event are Student Government Association Representative Suzi Peak, Vice President Mary Smith, Advisor Bryan Johnson, Advisor Billy Tart, Treasurer Nia King, and President Jalisa Isler.

WCCANS members, other students, and college employees contributed to the collection. The Pirate Nurse Network of Wayne County collaborated in the project and supplied around a third of the blankets.

WCCANS is the collective organization of the college’s nursing classes. WCC offers Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing programs.

The Y’s Men Outreach Event serves families that will not receive holiday assistance from other organizations by providing shopping outings, food, clothing and outerwear, toiletries, and this year, blankets. Local community groups and businesses donate the materials and volunteers assist with the event.

Last year, more than 60 families were assisted, touching around 400 individuals.

“We’ve been told that the Y is anticipating more than 300 kids this year,” said WCC Nursing Department Chair Billy Tart. “Thanks to this project, they will have enough blankets for them.”
