October 28, 2026

Dr. Monty Sullivan, acting president and CEO of the North Carolina Community College System, held a regional convening at Wayne Community College on Oct. 26.

Sullivan’s visit was part of a series of 12 regional convenings held to discuss regional priorities, workforce needs, and opportunities for the future.

During the convenings, Sullivan will meet with college leaders and community partners, gathering perspectives from across the state to inform the System’s priorities and strengthen its ability to serve students, employers, and communities statewide.

The group also toured Mt. Olive Pickle Company to get a firsthand look inside the largest pickle manufacturer in the nation. Design Engineer Alan Rangel-Vargas, a WCC graduate, showed the group around the production facility.

Sullivan was then led on a tour of WCC’s campus, visiting the Deacon Jones Automotive Center, the Center for Industrial Technology and Engineering, the Lamm Agricultural Complex, and the recent expansion of the Pine Building, which includes WCC’s nursing lab spaces.

“We were honored to host Dr. Sullivan at WCC to discuss our regional workforce needs and how our area community colleges are addressing them,” said Dr. Patty Pfeiffer, WCC president. “Through conversations, a campus tour, and a visit to one of our major production facilities, we were able to show Dr. Sullivan the unique workforce training opportunities in Eastern North Carolina.”
