Students Compete in Wayne County Fair Math Contest Sponsored by WCC

October 02, 2025

For the 36th year, Wayne Community College’s Mathematics Department partnered with local high schools to sponsor the Wayne County Fair High School Math Competition.

Teams of two students competed in a game show–style contest. Students were challenged in two rounds: the first focused on math trivia and mental math, and the second emphasized mathematical calculations.

Topics included algebra, geometry, probability, statistics, and trigonometry. Without the use of calculators, students relied on quick reasoning to prove their problem-solving skills and succeed in the fast-paced competition.

Third Place: Rosewood High School (Thu Min and Amina Hassan)

Division II:
First Place: Wayne School of Technical Arts (Jonathon Torres and Nolan Fishman)

In the final Winner vs. Winner round, the winners of each division faced off against each other, with Charles B. Aycock High School emerging as the champion.

The Foundation of WCC awarded monetary prizes to each team.

“We are pleased to create and administer this contest in conjunction with Wayne County Public Schools and the Wayne County Fair,” said WCC Mathematics Department Chair Katina Davis. “It is amazing to see students excel in mathematics and enjoy competing each year. There is much excitement in the room when questions are answered correctly!”

WCC Mathematics Instructor Katie Holloman, one of the event’s organizers, said, “This competition is about more than math—it’s about teamwork, critical thinking, and celebrating the talents of Wayne County’s students.”
