Synagogue Discoveries Topic of Sunday Talk

September 09, 2019

The Foundation of Wayne Community College will kick off its fall lecture series this Sunday afternoon with a presentation on new discoveries in the remains of a synagogue in the ancient village of Huqoq in Israel’s Galilee.

Dr. Jodi Magness, the excavation project leader, will describe these finds, including discoveries made last summer, in a slide-illustrated lecture. The presentation is set for 4 p.m. on Sept. 15 in Moffatt Auditorium in the Wayne Learning Center on the WCC campus.

Dr. Jodi Magness will speak about new discoveries in the remains of a synagogue in the ancient village of Huqoq in Israel’s Galilee on Sunday, Sept. 15 at WCC.

Magness has been directing excavations in Huqoq since 2011. The excavations have brought to light the remains of a monumental Late Roman (Fifth Century) synagogue building paved with stunning and unique mosaics, including biblical scenes and the first non-biblical story ever discovered decorating an ancient synagogue.

Magness is the Kenan Distinguished Professor for Teaching Excellence in Early Judaism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the current president of the Archaeological Institute of America.

She has received numerous education-related awards and recognition for her archaeological work. Magness and her work has been featured in National Geographic films and on the Discovery Channel. She has produced lecture courses for The Teaching Company’s Great Courses.
