Wayne Community College’s Cosmetology students have received scholarships awarded by hair care brand Cécred and public charity foundation BeyGOOD, both founded by Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.

Civella Beauty Academy in Goldsboro, where WCC students take Cosmetology classes, is one of five schools selected for the Cécred x BeyGOOD Fund’s scholarship program.

Civella Beauty Academy has received $25,000 from the Cécred x BeyGOOD Fund to award scholarships to students in WCC’s Cosmetology program.

The school received $25,000 to support students in WCC’s Cosmetology course and high school students enrolled in the College’s Natural Hair Care Specialist course.

Sheena Morning, owner of Civella Beauty Academy, applied for the scholarship and became a finalist. She met with the program manager and the BeyGOOD team, answering questions and giving them a virtual tour of the school, and then was announced as a recipient of funding for student scholarships.

The scholarship covers tuition and fees for registration, exams, and licensure. “With the exception of the new students who started this August, all of our currently enrolled students are awarded,” Morning said. “All of the students’ tuition is paid for through their graduation period up to 2026.” Cosmetology graduates who were enrolled at the time the scholarship was awarded will be reimbursed for their previously paid tuition.

Cécred and BeyGOOD selected the five institutions to award funding based on factors such as financial need, community impact, curriculum inclusivity, student support system, and academic performance. The other participating schools are located in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Detroit, and Washington, DC.

Civella Beauty Academy also received a donation of Cécred products along with the funding. The school provides beauty services to the public at a discounted rate, and they are now offering a luxury “Cécred experience” to their clientele to purchase in addition to their current services.

The Cécred education team and individuals from BeyGOOD traveled from Los Angeles to teach those at Civella Beauty Academy how to use the products. “It exposes our students to high-quality brand products,” Morning said.

WCC’s Cosmetology program is part of the College’s Workforce Continuing Education Services. It provides students with the appropriate training and required number of contact hours needed to fulfill licensure requirements with the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners.
