For the 37th year, Wayne Community College’s Mathematics Department partnered with local high schools to sponsor the Wayne County Fair High School Math Competition.
Teams of two students competed in a game show–style contest. Students were challenged in two rounds: the first focused on math trivia and mental math, and the second emphasized mathematical calculations.
Topics included algebra, geometry, probability, statistics, and trigonometry. Without the use of calculators, students relied on quick reasoning, teamwork, and critical thinking to succeed.

The contest was divided into two divisions. The results for each division are:
Division I:
First Place: Wayne School of Engineering (Fadl Alhursmi and Robert Wilson)
Second Place: Goldsboro High School (JahQuell Artis and XaRyah Jenkins)
Third Place: Wayne Early Middle College High School (Valeria Castaneda and Easton Vinson)
Fourth Place: Charles B. Aycock High School (Dashon Hairston and Josslyn Snyder)
Fifth Place: Eastern Wayne High School (Ezekiel Roberson and Jackson Rowe)
Division II:
First Place: Wayne School of Technical Arts (Antony Jobson and Connor Rubio)
Second Place: Wayne Country Day School (Sally Coates and Anna Sauls)
Third Place: Spring Creek High School (Alexis Dietz and Briana Duruttya)
Fourth Place: Southern Wayne High School (Axel Marcano and Linzey Yeoman)
Fifth Place: Rosewood High School (Xylea Howell and Jamai Norman)
In the final Winner vs. Winner round, the winners of each division faced off against each other, with Wayne School of Technical Arts emerging as the champion.
All participants received monetary prizes from the Wayne County Fair and scholarships from the Foundation of WCC and the North Carolina State Elks Association.
“The event brought energy, excitement, and community spirit while highlighting the talent and perseverance of our local students,” said WCC Mathematics Instructor Katie Holloman, one of the event’s organizers. “We are extremely proud of all participants for their outstanding effort and enthusiasm.”
