Presented by The Carolina Public Humanities and The Foundation of Wayne Community College

We all learn in grade school that America was founded on religious freedom, but did you know that when the Puritans came to the New World they planned to establish a theocracy, or that America had state churches up until the 1840s? This talk gives historical context to contemporary debates in America over religious freedom, and highlights key moments from American history to explain the difficulties in actually enacting the lofty ideal of religious freedom.
