Wayne Community College will provide a virtual “Spooktacular Science Saturday” in October.

During the free, hands-on science activity, children will use chemistry to make candy.

“We’ll teach participants about acids and bases, and they’ll get to make their own edible fizzy treat. When you taste it, you’ll get to experience a chemical reaction happening in your own mouth!” said Biology Instructor and Honors Program Coordinator Lynn Swafford.

Children of any age are welcome to participate, but the activity is geared toward elementary age kids. “We’ll teach them what acids and bases are, but we’ll also talk about pH and neutralization reactions, so older kids and teens can still have fun and learn something new,” Swafford said.

“Biology 110 honors students are planning the live event and will help lead it” alongside college faculty, Swafford said.

The first 100 registered children will be given activity kits supplied by the NC Community Colleges’ BioNetwork. They can pick up their kits in front of the Wayne Learning Center on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2.

Details about accessing the live virtual event, which is set for 10-11 a.m. on Oct. 9, will be emailed to registered participants.

To register, individuals should complete the online form.
