“Gods and Generals” Movie Next in Civil War Series

The Foundation of Wayne Community College’s series of lectures on American Civil War battles continues next week with a movie screening and commentary.

Lynn Bull, a retired social studies teacher, will provide his observations on “Gods and Generals,” the 2003 film starring Jeff Daniels, Robert Duvall, and Stephen Lang in which he had a speaking part. The two-part showing and talk will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 20 and 22 in Moffatt Auditorium in the Wayne Learning Center at the college’s main campus in Goldsboro.

Bull is a graduate of The Citadel with a bachelor’s degree in history. He taught at Goldsboro High School for 16 years and is a former program coordinator at Bentonville Battleground.

Bull’s Civil War re-enacting hobby led him to begin sewing uniforms and tents. That pastime has earned him requests to reproduce uniforms for the National Park Service and the U.S. Army Quartermasters Museum, and he created tents for the movies “Matewan” and “Ironweed” as well as a marquis (sleeping tent) for a CBS television series on George Washington.

The next lectures in the series are on:

Sept. 17 – The Battle of Chickamauga
Oct. 22 – The Civil War in eastern North Carolina – 1863
Nov. 19 – The Battle of Chattanooga
Dec. 10 – Highlights of North Carolinians in Battle

All are set for 7 p.m. and will be held in Moffatt Auditorium. They are free and open to the public with no reservations or registrations required.
