Braswell Pursues New Beginning at WCC

October 19, 2026

Shakeya Braswell is setting an example for her five children that it is never too late to accomplish a goal. As a student in Wayne Community College’s Operations Management program, she is creating a brighter future for herself and her family by pursuing an education that will prepare her for a great career.

Braswell has taken college classes in the past but was unable to complete her degree due to experiencing domestic abuse. After leaving and changing her circumstances, Braswell decided to work toward a new beginning for her and her children.

“I had been living life without any clear path,” Braswell said. “In order for my kids to have a better life, I had to create one for myself, which is how I ended up at WCC.” She enrolled in the Operations Management program in May.

Leadership in the operations industry

WCC’s Operations Management program is ideal for those interested in strategy, communication, business, and project management. Operations managers coordinate the activities of business organizations, directing the production, pricing, sales, and distribution of products or services.

The program offers an Associate in Applied Science degree, several certificates, and multiple transfer pathways to four-year colleges.

Braswell has mainly worked in manufacturing, so she knew WCC’s Operations Management program would align with and build upon her experience. “The program is great,” she said. “I felt like it would lead me to better positions, and I also love the transfer opportunities.”

A successful college experience

Operations Management courses are taught 100% online, providing much-needed flexibility for the working mother of five. “I love it,” she said. “I have very good instructors. I’m learning more about how things flow within manufacturing and how to be a better leader.”

As a fully online student, Braswell is taking advantage of opportunities to connect with other WCC students and get involved. She was invited to join the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society this fall and is looking forward to networking with her peers, growing as a leader in the process.

Braswell will graduate in the fall of 2027 with an associate degree and three certificates. She plans to continue her education and earn a bachelor’s degree after graduating from WCC.

A fresh start

As she finally works toward making her educational dreams come true, Braswell is grateful she found her way to WCC. “The people here are great,” she said. “They help you figure out which path to take.”

With many responsibilities to balance, Braswell still believes education is a valuable pursuit, no matter what life circumstances someone faces. “Take it one day at a time,” she said. “Your future is significant, and you have to start somewhere.”

Although she has faced many challenges and obstacles in life, Braswell said she hopes her story can encourage others to move toward becoming the person they want to be. “I felt like I would never become anything, and here I am, trying to make the best of it,” she said.
