Two Wayne Community College students recently presented at the 2025 North Carolina Honors Association (NCHA) Conference at Queens University of Charlotte.
Abdulla Fadah and Alexis Alviso-Bustos, both pursuing an Associate in Arts degree, are members of WCC’s Honors Program and Scholars of Global Distinction.
The students’ presentation was based on the service learning project they completed as part of WCC’s Leadership Development course held last spring. Titled “The Gift of Reading, The Privilege of Pages,” the presentation detailed their group project that aimed to empower students to recognize and value their freedom to read and access a quality education.

Through the project, Fadah, Alviso-Bustos, and two other group members hosted a book drive in the community to collect children’s books to donate to elementary school students. “Our main accomplishment in this project was the experience to read to second grade students at a local elementary school and being able to gift each student a book to take home,” the WCC students shared in their presentation abstract.
WCC was one of only two community colleges represented among this year’s conference presenters.
Fadah and Alviso-Bustos were the first WCC students to present at the NCHA Conference in person. Former WCC students have presented virtually.
This year’s conference theme was “Rooted & Rising: Honors in a Changing Natural World.”
WCC’s Honors Program focuses on learning, leadership, and service as integral components of a well-rounded education. Students who meet the academic criteria and enroll in Associate in Arts or Associate in Science programs are eligible to apply. Learn more on WCC’s website.
