WCC to Offer Building Construction Technology Program

June 11, 2026

Wayne Community College has added an academic program for those interested in pursuing a career in the construction industry.

The College’s new Building Construction Technology program will allow students to develop the industry-relevant skills needed to work in construction. Through multiple levels of carpentry training and real-world coursework, students will be prepared to enter the workforce.

Beginning in the fall of 2026, the program will offer an Associate in Applied Science degree, a diploma, and a certificate.

In WCC’s Building Construction Technology program, students will work with construction materials; gain hands-on experience in carpentry, framing, and finishing; train in OSHA safety and job site practices; and understand building science, structures, and estimating.

Students will also read and interpret construction blueprints, learn about building codes and inspections, explore surveying and site layout, and use CAD software to design and plan projects.

WCC Engineering, Manufacturing, and Industrial Technologies Department Chair Steven Reese said students in the program will gain skills in many areas of the construction discipline. “These skills will help build a more talented and marketable employee,” he said.

Reese also said students will participate in projects that provide valuable work experience, such as building a house that will be auctioned off after completion.

With several construction companies based in Goldsboro, WCC’s graduates can expect to build careers locally and contribute to the development of communities in Wayne County and throughout Eastern North Carolina.

Those who receive an associate degree in the program can also transfer directly to East Carolina University to earn a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management or a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology.

WCC Vice President of Academic and Student Services Kristie Sauls said the new program will give students a direct pathway into high-demand careers and help local employers address workforce shortages.

“The launch of our Building Construction Technology program represents an important investment in both our students and our community,” Sauls said. “Wayne Community College is proud to partner with the construction industry to prepare the next generation of professionals who will help build our homes, businesses, and communities for years to come.”
