Foundation Lecture – More than Just Mosaics

Moffatt Auditorium in the Wayne Learning Center | September 15, 2019 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The Foundation of Wayne Community College’s Arts and Humanities Program and The Carolina Public Humanities present “More than Just Mosaics: The Ancient Synagogue at Hoquq in Israel’s Galilee.”

Since 2011, Professor Jodi Magness, who was featured in National Geographic and on the Discovery Channel, has been directing excavations in the ancient village of Huqoq in Israel’s Galilee. The excavations have brought to light the remains of a monumental Late Roman (fifth century) synagogue building paved with stunning and unique mosaics, including biblical scenes and the first non-biblical story ever discovered decorating an ancient synagogue. In this slide-illustrated lecture, Professor Magness will describe these exciting finds, including the discoveries made last summer. For more information visit www.huqoq.org.

Free and open to the public.
